Academic Transport is Southwest Indiana's established school bus contractor — with deep community roots, an in-house team, and a renewed commitment to our drivers and the districts we serve.
Academic Transport's roots go back to 1962, when Carroll Nix, Deanie Nix, and Deretha Robb founded Nix Bus Sales in Southwest Indiana. The company established itself as a trusted Blue Bird school bus dealer serving the region for decades.
In 1983, Larry Broerman purchased Nix Bus Sales from Carroll Nix and Deretha Robb, becoming President and growing the company. Starting in 1991, Nix Bus expanded into school bus route contracting — building lasting partnerships with local school corporations that continue today.
In 2023, A local group of business leaders acquired Nix Bus Sales and rebranded the company as Academic Transport. With new ownership came a renewed investment in facilities, fleet, driver pay, and capacity — while honoring the community relationships built over three decades of service.
Today, Academic Transport is locally owned and operated, serving three school corporations with the same commitment to safety and reliability that has defined this company since 1991.
